California Seeks to Shift Major Battery Incentive Toward Fire, Blackout Resiliency

As a response to the state’s wildfire and blackout crisis, the California Public Utilities Commission has finalized a proposal that reserves subsidies — $1 per watt-hour, helping offset the upfront costs of a typical residential solar-storage system — through the SGIP program. Disadvantaged residents who live in Tier 2 and 3 “High Fire Threat Districts” spread across the state, or customers who experienced two discrete “public safety power shutoff” (PSPS) events, like the multi-day blackouts that left millions of customers without power last fall are eligible.
